Course Tutors

All students will be allocated a course tutor. Your course tutor will take an active part in your support and guidance while you are with Orkney College. Orkney College has a support service to help students with their studies. If you are about to start a course, or are on a course, tell us if you think you may need additional help, even if only for a temporary period. This could include support with coursework, health issues, financial issues, accessing the building/facilities, or any other area.

Should you wish to speak to the support tutor contact your course tutor and they will arrange an appointment for you. Alternatively you can contact the support tutor directly in room G3.15, by phoning 569275 or by e-mailing kathryn.sclater@orkney.uhi.ac.uk. Staff respects confidentiality.

Orkney College staff endevour to provide a positive learning environment which is non-discriminatory and inclusive. Relationship Scotland - Orkney (RSO)

RSO is an independent local charity, which provides support for individuals, couples, children, young people and families affected by relationship difficulties through the following specialist services.

Counselling – provides a safe, confidential space where clients can explore difficulties, talk freely about their feelings and receive help to find ways of moving forward with their lives. Counsellors are all trained professionals, supervised by suitably qualified practice supervisors.

Family Mediation – supports parents who are separated and who need help to make practical arrangements for their children. Mediation is voluntary and provides a safe place where people can communicate and listen to other’s points of views. Mediators are professionally trained and supervised to work impartially to help find ways of improving things. Children may be consulted during the mediation process, appropriate to their age, and this can help to inform parents’ decision making. Other forms of mediation available are Inter Generational and Homelessness Mediation. (This is a voluntary process which can often help to avoid costly legal proceedings.)

The Child Contact Centre – is a safe, welcoming, neutral venue where children and young people can meet up with a non resident parent or family member who is important to them. Support is available throughout the contact, as is help with the handing over of children between parents who are separated.

*‘Supervised Support’ is also available, usually by request from the statutory services. (*Charges apply, available on request. Legal Aid may apply)

Relationships Scotland – Orkney is affiliated to the national body Relationships Scotland, and is also an organisational member of COSCA, the professional body for Counselling & Psychotherapy in Scotland.

The above services are all free (with the above exception*) and confidential. Contributions are welcome however, from anyone who feels they would like to support our work.
