Drama and Production BA (Hons)

What is special about this course?

If you dream of pursuing a career relating to drama and theatre, this new BA (Hons) Drama and Production*, incorporating touring and festival performance, is ideal. With a focus on devising, production and entrepreneurship skills, you will be trained to be performers, practitioners, producers and researchers. The degree also offers progression into wider study and career pathways relating to health and well-being (drama therapy), education (PGDE with drama) and arts administration.

The course combines theoretical, practical and performance-based approaches, along with a programme of master classes, workshops and performances delivered by professionals working within the industry. You will be encouraged to develop your own professional network and will benefit from the programme’s connections with theatre practitioners and arts centres in the region. This will give you fantastic access to a variety of placements and touring opportunities, as well as supporting you beyond the course and onwards onto your chosen path.

The programme runs its own theatre production company, facilitating in-house, extra-curricular productions as well as organising visiting productions, allowing you to develop considerable performance production skills and giving you valuable experience to ensure you are industry-ready. These experiences greatly enhance learning and teaching across the degree, allowing you to make connections with the local and wider performance communities.

In your final year, you will develop a major piece of practice-based and/or text-based research, drawing on the critical and performance skills you have developed throughout the degree. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to showcase your performance work at venues and festivals across the region.

Entry requirements

  • 3 Scottish Highers at grade BBC or above; these must include English at grade C or above
  • At least one of the above must be taken from the list of relevant subjects
  • Higher Drama is recommended but in cases where this has not been available to applicants, evidence of other drama activity will be taken into account
  • At all levels, recognition of prior experiential learning will be taken into account where appropriate
  • As part of the selection process, you will be required to give a 5-minute presentation on a performance that you have been involved with or researched; this will be followed by an interview, during which you will answer questions relating to your presentation

Advanced entry to year two:

  • Direct entry to year two may be possible with an HNC Acting and Performance, or Musical Theatre, with 15 credits and B or above in the Graded Unit, or 120 credits at SCQF level 7 in a relevant subject.

You will learn through a combination of face-to-face and video conference seminars, intensive practical workshops and online via the university’s virtual learning environment (VLE) with support from your tutors.
