What is special about this course?

This Early Education and Childcare course is most suitable for mature students or school leavers who are interested in caring for children as a career.

This stimulating course provides students with the opportunity to study subjects related to childcare and development at Higher level. You will enjoy a mixed course of theory and practice both in college and in a placement to suit their chosen specialism.

Entry requirements

The candidate would normally be expected to have achieved 4 passes at national 5, one of which should be English.  Non-traditional qualifications will also be considered.

The course is taught through a mixture of college and work placement experiences. You will attend placement two days a week and are required to complete a variety of projects and log books to demonstrate their ability to relate theory to practice.

Fees

Further education tuition fees

Full time

If you are studying a full time Further Education course (NCs, NQs etc.) the College claims your fees from the Scottish Funding Council for students who are under 18 on the first day of the course. Students over the age of 18 on the first day of the course have to apply to Orkney Islands Council (OIC) for a tuition fees bursary.

Part time

Normally you are responsible for your course fees but if you are in receipt of certain benefits you may be eligible for a Part Time Course Fee Waiver. Not all part-time courses at Orkney College UHI are covered by the Fee Waiver Scheme and only certain benefits are acceptable as a basis for a Fee Waiver. Please contact the college to enquire.
