Introduction to Art, Design and Textiles SQA Level 5

What is special about this course?

This one day per week course gives students the opportunity to develop skills in a variety of media and potentially work towards further art and design courses.  The course focuses on the basics of creative exploration, creating a sketchbook, working in mixed media, expressive activity and the design process.
Workshops include: Drawing, digital photography, textiles, colour theory, moodboard, screenprinting, monoprinting, mixed media, painting, sculpture, felting, heat press.

Units of study will cover the following topics:

  • Design Studies: Introduction to Mixed Media
  • Two-Dimensional Design - The Design Process
  • Art and Design: Expressive Activity
  • Art and Design: Introduction to Contemporary Art Practice
  • Art and Design: Sketchbook Development - Thematic Studies
  • Screen Printing: Multiple Colour Design Printed on Fabric

    Full time

    If you are studying a full time Further Education course (NCs, NQs etc.) the College claims your fees from the Scottish Funding Council for students who are under 18 on the first day of the course. Students over the age of 18 on the first day of the course have to apply to Orkney Islands Council (OIC) for a tuition fees bursary.

    Information on the tuition fees bursary is available on the OIC website.

    Part time

    Normally you are responsible for your course fees but if you are in receipt of certain benefits you may be eligible for a Part Time Course Fee Waiver. Not all part-time courses at Orkney College UHI are covered by the Fee Waiver Scheme and only certain benefits are acceptable as a basis for a Fee Waiver. Please contact the college to enquire.

    If you are eligible, you may be entitled to an ILA of up to £200 a year towards a course.


    £520 (includes materials) – Funded by Self / ILA200 / Fee Waiver (materials element (£90) self fund)

    What can I do on completion of my course?

    This course would allow students to progress to the NC Art & Design course.
