General Building Operations SVQ2

What is special about this course?

This OSAT (On Site Assessment and Training) SVQ2 General Building qualification will ensure that learners gain the essential knowledge and practical skills they need to correctly and efficiently demonstrate their abilities in general building operations, and earn an SVQ level 2 certificate. It is ideal for those working throughout the construction industry who need to be able to demonstrate an ability in general building operations.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required but candidates should be experienced construction workers.

Subjects include mandatory and optional trade related units.

Mandatory units may include:

  • Conform to General Workplace Safety
  • Conform to Efficient Working Practices
  • CITB Health and Safety Test

Optional may include:

  • Establish Work Area Protection and Safety
  • Segregate the Area for Highway Works
  • Lay Modular Pavement
  • Lay Kerbs and Channels
  • Set Out Secondary Dimensional Work Control

How will I study my course?

    You will be assessed in your workplace using OSAT (On Site Assessment and Training).

    Approximately 1 year on site.

      Further education tuition fees

      Full time

      If you are studying a full time Further Education course (NCs, NQs etc.) the College claims your fees from the Scottish Funding Council for students who are under 18 on the first day of the course. Students over the age of 18 on the first day of the course have to apply to Orkney Islands Council (OIC) for a tuition fees bursary.

      Part time

      Normally you are responsible for your course fees but if you are in receipt of certain benefits you may be eligible for a Part Time Course Fee Waiver. Not all part-time courses at Orkney College UHI are covered by the Fee Waiver Scheme and only certain benefits are acceptable as a basis for a Fee Waiver. Please contact the college to enquire.

      If you are eligible, you may be entitled to an ILA of up to £200 a year towards a course. Further information can be found at
