Social Services and Health Care (Children and Young People) SVQ3

What is special about this course?

SVQ 3 Social Services and Health Care allows you to evidence that you can meet the National Standards drawn up for work in social care at practitioner level. It is one of the qualifications specified by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), which meets the registration criteria for social care workers.

The SVQ Level 3 awards each involve completion of 8 units, 3 of which are contained in the HNC Social Care. These include a focus on communicating for and about individuals, health and safety, and reflecting on and developing practice. Other units will be relevant to work in particular social care settings.

Entry requirements

Minimum age 18 years. SVQ 2 or equivalent qualification. An appropriate job role that meets the requirements for evidencing practice at SVQ 3. A minimum of 120 hours relevant care experience.

The SVQ Level 3 involves completion of 8 units, 3 mandatory and 5 option units from a given selection.

Mandatory Units focus on

  • Promoting Effective Communication
  • Health and Safety
  • Reflecting on and Developing your Practice.

The course focuses primarily on the development and enhancement of social care skills. Students study a range of subjects including

  • Social Care Theory for Practice
  • Social Policy
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Protection of Individuals from Harm and Abuse
  • Graded Unit
  • 3 SVQ units plus 2 option units.

There is a choice of option units which allow students to choose units that are occupationally relevant.

This course is delivered via classroom based learning as well as work-based assessment and tutorials.

The course is continuously assessed.

Fees

Full time

If you are studying a full time Further Education course (NCs, NQs etc.) the College claims your fees from the Scottish Funding Council for students who are under 18 on the first day of the course. Students over the age of 18 on the first day of the course have to apply to Orkney Islands Council (OIC) for a tuition fees bursary.

Part time

Normally you are responsible for your course fees but if you are in receipt of certain benefits you may be eligible for a Part Time Course Fee Waiver. Not all part-time courses at Orkney College UHI are covered by the Fee Waiver Scheme and only certain benefits are acceptable as a basis for a Fee Waiver. Please contact the college to enquire.

If you are eligible, you may be entitled to an ILA of up to £200 a year towards a course.

What can I do on completion of my course?

Progression

Degree in Social Work
HNC Social Care will allow articulation into the second year of some degree programmes
PDA Care Service Management.

Career Opportunities

There are many job and career opportunities in social care employment in public, private and voluntary agencies working with various service user groups.
