What is special about this course?

This full time Orkney College course aims to give students the qualifications and opportunities to access other Orkney College courses at National Certificate level or to move into employment.

The course will involve students experiencing a variety of subject areas, through project based learning which will provide a variety of creative and practical activities.  The course includes the Employability Award; a qualification that helps students develop employability skills. Work Experience is an integral part of the course. The course provides the opportunity to achieve useful academic qualifications, which will help students progress onto other college courses in the future, or to go into employment

Entry requirements

This course would be ideally suited to school leavers who are unsure what to do next or need further qualifications and study skills.

Applicants need to have four National 4 passes or equivalent.

All applicants will be interviewed prior to being considered for a place on the course

The course consists of a variety of SQA modules at National 4, 5 and 6 levels and is based around the following areas:

 

Core Skills: IT, Communication and Numeracy

Projects/Planning and Organising Events/Young Enterprise Scotland Business

Employability Award

Employability Skills – Writing CVs, application forms, interview skills

Health and Safety

Accident and Emergency Procedures

Art/Crafts

Hospitality

How will I study my course?

  • Full Time

You will study by way of class-room based lectures and tutorials in College and by using on-line support materials.

The Course is continuously assessed.

    Fees

    Full time

    If you are studying a full time Further Education course (NCs, NQs etc.) the College claims your fees from the Scottish Funding Council for students who are under 18 on the first day of the course. Students over the age of 18 on the first day of the course have to apply to Orkney Islands Council (OIC) for a tuition fees bursary.

    Part time

    Normally you are responsible for your course fees but if you are in receipt of certain benefits you may be eligible for a Part Time Course Fee Waiver. Not all part-time courses at Orkney College UHI are covered by the Fee Waiver Scheme and only certain benefits are acceptable as a basis for a Fee Waiver. Please contact the college to enquire.

    If you are eligible, you may be entitled to an ILA of up to £200 a year towards a course.

    What can I do on completion of my course?

    Progression on to a subject specific qualification.

    Career in to general Employment.
