About Us
A small community with big opportunities.
At UHI Orkney, we’re proud of our close-knit community and unique island setting. With campuses in Kirkwall and Stromness, we offer a learning experience that combines personal support with access to the wider University of the Highlands and Islands network.
Our courses reflect Orkney’s strengths, opportunities, and future ambitions — from local industries and culture to global research connections. Whether studying on campus or online, you’ll join a community where innovation, tradition, and a love of learning come together.

Guided by Values, Driven by Community.
At UHI Orkney, our work is shaped by our core values: Collaboration, Openness, Respect, and Excellence. These guide how we teach, research, and connect with our community.
Looking ahead to 2030, we are committed to providing flexible lifelong learning, strengthening our local and global impact, and creating an environment where everyone can learn, grow, and succeed. View our strategic plan here.
Research with a Worldwide Impact
UHI Orkney is home to a vibrant research community, with work that connects Orkney’s unique environment, heritage, and industries to global conversations.
Our key strengths include:
-
Agronomy – advancing sustainable farming practices.
-
Archaeology – uncovering and sharing Orkney’s world-renowned heritage.
-
Northern Studies – exploring the culture and identity of the North Atlantic region.
Research in Orkney is closely tied to teaching, meaning students learn from staff who are leaders in their fields. We collaborate with local communities, businesses, and international partners to create impact far beyond the islands.

Inspiring the Next Generation
We work closely with schools across Orkney to support the Curriculum for Excellence, providing a range of Skills for Work courses. These allow young people to explore different pathways and gain vocational qualifications while still at school.
Community Connections - Stronger Together
Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. Alongside our work with schools, we partner with local businesses, community groups, and organisations to ensure our teaching and research bring real benefits to the islands.
These partnerships help us create opportunities for young people, support the needs of employers, and share Orkney’s knowledge and culture with the wider world. By connecting community, industry, and education, we strengthen Orkney’s future while contributing to global conversations.
