Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) Courses

The following CPC courses are available in November 2016:

CPC Traffic Law

Duration: 1 x 7 hour module

Time: 8.30 am to 4.30 pm

Venue: Orkney College

Dates: 7 November

Cost: £100.00 (includes tea/coffee & lunch)

Qualification: Certificate of Attendance, also credit of 7 hours towards periodic training requirement.

Target audience: Drivers of lorries over 3.5 tonnes who need to complete periodic training of 35 hours before 2014

Course Aims:To refresh and develop the participant’s understanding of relevant aspects of traffic law to help them to use the road in a safe and legal manner

Course Objectives, by the end of the session drivers should be able to:

  • Demonstrate that you understand the legal definition of a road
  • Recall the national speed limits for different types of roads and vehicles
  • Describe the main types of road sign shape and colour and their generic meanings
  • Demonstrate that you know the meaning of road signs and markings
  • Explain why particular parking scenarios and hazardous and illegal
  • Identify different types of pedestrian crossing and the driving rules associated with these
  • Understand the principles of the system of vehicle control
  • Demonstrate that you can interpret the sections of the driver licence card and paper counterpart
  • Explain your legal responsibilities including reporting requirements if involved in a road traffic collision
  • Demonstrate you know the law with regard to the use of mobile phones and wearing seat belts while driving
  • Understand the term ‘corporate manslaughter’ and the responsibilities of workers under the corporate manslaughter law

CPC Manual Handling For Drivers

Duration: 1 x 7 hour module

Time: 8.30 am to 4.30 pm

Venue: Orkney College

Dates: 8 November

Cost: £100.00 (includes tea/coffee & lunch)

Qualification: Certificate of attendance through approved centre

Target audience: Anyone holding a lorry or coach driver licence who requires to complete the 35 hours periodic training

  • Importance of posture
  • Techniques
  • Feedback and evaluation

CPC First Aid For Drivers

Duration: 1 x 7 hour module

Time: 8.30 am to 4.30 pm

Venue: Orkney College

Dates: 9 November

Cost: £100.00 (includes tea/coffee & lunch)

Qualification: SQA Unit: Emergency First Aid in the Workplace. This unit meets the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 in respect of Emergency First Aid at Work, also credit of 7 hours towards periodic training requirement

Target audience: Drivers of lorries over 3.5 tonnes or PSV’s who need to complete periodic training of 35 hours before 2014

Course content:

This is a continuous assessment course. The course will include the following topics:

  • Introduction
  • Responsibilities of the first aider
  • Assessing an incident
  • Managing an unresponsive casualty
  • The respiratory system
  • Wounds and bleeding
  • Shock
  • Seizures
  • Dealing with minor injuries
  • Other injuries
