Dress code

Graduation is one of the most memorable days of your academic journey, and the way you present yourself adds to the sense of occasion. The photographs taken on the day will be treasured for years to come, and choosing a neat, classic outfit will help you feel confident — both when posing for photos and when crossing the stage in front of an audience to receive your award.

There’s no strict uniform, but we ask all graduands to dress smartly for the occasion and encourage guests to do the same. Think of it as similar to attending a wedding or another formal celebration — a chance to look your best while marking an important milestone.

For graduands

Smart attire is expected for all students taking part in the Ceremony. Shirts, blouses, trousers, kilts, skirts, or dresses are all appropriate, along with smart shoes. Please avoid overly casual clothing such as jeans, t-shirts, or trainers, as these don’t reflect the formality of the event or the significance of crossing the stage to receive your award.

Please note: if your course of study entitles you to wear a gown, remember that it will sit over your outfit, with parts of your clothing visible at the neckline, sleeves, and hem. More information on gown hire here.

For guests

Guests are warmly encouraged to join in the sense of occasion by dressing in smart or semi-formal attire. Many choose outfits they might wear to a wedding, church service, or other celebratory event. Layered clothing is recommended, as the Cathedral can feel cool inside.

Practical tips

Shoes: Graduants should choose footwear you feel steady walking in, as you will cross the stage in front of an audience.

Weather: Remember you’ll be moving between venues, and it can be particularly chilly at this time of year. A coat or jacket is advisable, especially as Orkney weather can be unpredictable. At the Ceremony, graduands can hang up, or place their coats under seats so you don’t need to carry them across the stage.
