Venue
Your graduation ceremony will take place in St Magnus Cathedral, the heart of Kirkwall and one of Orkney’s most iconic landmarks. Founded in 1137 by Earl Rognvald in honour of his uncle, St Magnus, the cathedral has stood for nearly 900 years as a place of community, culture, and celebration. Often called the Light of the North, St Magnus Cathedral is renowned for its striking red and yellow sandstone, its beautiful stained glass, and its sense of history. It remains a living place of worship and welcome, and we are proud to celebrate your achievements within such a remarkable setting.
Graduating in St Magnus Cathedral is a unique experience — one that connects you not only to generations of Orcadians, but also to the many students who have crossed the stage here before you.
There will be two pipers in the Cathedral, along with music performed by local artists. Please arrive in good time to enjoy the atmosphere, take photographs with friends and family, and soak in this unforgettable venue for your special day.
For practicalities: access to the main entrance is by steps. Step-free entry is available via a side entrance, and staff and ushers will be on hand to guide guests who require this. Visitor facilities, including toilets, are available on site, and assistance will be provided for anyone who needs extra support or direction.
