Since completing her studies, Bethan has continued to grow her career here in Orkney and is now Client Services Manager at Gregor Howitt Wealth Management Ltd in Kirkwall.

Reflecting on her time at UHI Orkney, Bethan says one of her key interests throughout her studies was business culture and the positive impact it can have on job satisfaction.

“One of my key interests throughout my studies at UHI Orkney was business culture and the positive impact that this has on job satisfaction, and it was clear to me at every stage from my initial research to prepare for the interview until joining the team that the heart of success at GHWM is down to its people.”

Bethan joined Gregor Howitt Wealth Management in 2018 as an Administrator. In 2022, she was given the opportunity to move into management, initially to cover maternity leave, before the role became permanent in 2023.

Since then, she has enjoyed using the skills and knowledge gained during her degree in a range of areas, including improving internal processes, leading on client communications and contributing to marketing projects.

“I have enjoyed applying the learning from my degree, from improving internal processes, taking the lead on client communications to being involved in marketing projects.”

Bethan’s story is a great example of how studying business can open doors across a wide range of roles and sectors. From communication and marketing to leadership, operations and people management, business qualifications can help students develop practical, transferable skills that are valued in many workplaces.

For Bethan, the variety of her current role is one of the things she enjoys most.

“This role is perfect for anyone who loves variety in the day-to-day and has a flair for talking to clients. All training is provided so do not be put off if you do not have industry specific experience – I didn’t either when I joined.”

Business courses at UHI Orkney are designed to help students build strong foundations in areas such as management, communication, enterprise, marketing and organisational culture, with flexible progression options available.

Whether you are looking to start with an HNC, progress towards a degree, or develop skills that can support a future career in a local business, Bethan’s journey shows what can be possible when you study business close to home.
