In education, age is no barrier
There is no age limit for learning. 89 year old John Gray is a perfect example that if you have the willingness and the correct attitude to learn something, age becomes just a number.
"I am currently a student at UHI College in Kirkwall and, at age 89, am in my third year studying Art in the Art and Design department of the College. After a working life in Electrical Engineering, then RAF and finally in secondary teaching, I remembered that my wife said that I should do more drawing and painting, something that I had done on and off since I was a teenager but never had had time for. When I was suddenly on my own I remembered what she had said and thought this a good idea so, in 2019, I applied for a part time course and was immediately made welcome by all, an enthusiastic and professional group of tutors and a happy lot of fellow students. This proved to be one of the best decisions that I had ever made and I enjoyed every minute.
This course was an introduction to a lot of Art forms including drawing, painting , sculpture. Print making and even embroidery. This was fun and challenges all the way. The following years I carried on with an NC Art & Design Course and am at present coming to the end of a busy and interesting year and intend to continue.
Art has no age barriers and I would recommend Art to anyone who is looking for something exciting and challenging to do, each and every applicant is treated individually and the environment is a great place to spend time with lovely and talented group of people and each one comes up with amazing and different pieces of Art.
When I come back from a day at College I always feel better and feel I have again achieved something worthwhile. Art adds a dimension to life and you can learn skills and new friends that you never expected."
