Empowering Futures: Online Course Offers Pathway to Rewarding Careers in Social Care in Orkney
It is widely recognised that up to one-third of all social care positions in Orkney are currently unfilled. These roles are crucial because they involve providing support to individuals across various settings, including hospitals, care homes, supported living environments, and community services.
Working in social care is not only essential for the well-being of those in need, but it can also be immensely rewarding for the caregivers themselves.
Despite the importance of these positions, several potential factors contribute to the lack of applications. Many possible candidates may erroneously believe they are unsuitable or unqualified for these roles, leading them to exclude themselves from the application process. This self-doubt could stem from perceived barriers such as a lack of formal qualifications, previous experience, or even misconceptions about the nature of the work involved.
It is essential to address these misconceptions and promote the idea that a caring attitude and a willingness to learn are often more important than formal qualifications alone. By highlighting the diverse paths into this rewarding career, we can encourage more individuals to consider a future in social care, ultimately helping to fill these vital vacancies in Orkney.
The UHI Orkney Health and Social Care department is collaborating with employers to offer a short and flexible learning experience. The six-week-long Introduction to a Career in Social Care programme aims to empower potential candidates for vacant positions and connect them with employers by providing a guaranteed interview in Orkney at the end of the course.
The course is offered entirely online, providing flexible access for individuals who are new to the health and social care environment or who are currently working in various fields and are interested in exploring a career in social care. This format allows learners to engage with the material at their own pace, making it an ideal choice for those contemplating a change from their current profession. We have seen a significant number of students express a desire to transition to a people-centred career, driven by a passion for helping others and making a positive impact in their communities.
By enrolling in this course, they gain valuable skills and knowledge that enhance their employability in the social care sector. The curriculum is designed to equip students with essential competencies and understanding needed to succeed in this rewarding field, ultimately facilitating their journey toward meaningful employment in social care.
The course introduces students to key concepts such as safeguarding, communication skills, coping skills, and self-evaluation. It utilises a discussion board approach to teaching, which actively engages students in their learning. There is no exam for this course. Students have the opportunity to attend an interview with an employer in Orkney on completion of the course and will receive an industry-recognised certificate.
