What is special about this course?
Based in the art studios of UHI Orkney, this course enables students to explore and develop a wide range of art and design skills including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, digital imaging, design and textiles. Alongside the practical studio work, there are artisit talks, visits to exhibitions and contextual studies throughout the course.
Professional skills are developed throughout, often alongside 'live projects'. These have involved the Pier Arts Centre, the St Magnus International Festival, the Orkney Folk Festival and Sheila Fleet Jewellery. Students are encouraged to engage with the unique environment, culture and history of Orkney, as well as look outwards to the wider cultural context.
The course encourages diversity, attracting people of all ages and backgrounds to study in Orkney.
Entry requirements
Interview with a selected portfolio of Art and Design work.
2 Intermediate 2, or National 5 passes (Usually Art & Design and English).
However it is recommended that any student wishing to articulate on to Degree courses gains entry requirements prior to application (usually 4 passes at Higher).
Applications to the course are welcome from adults returning to education who may not possess the entry requirements.

In UHI Orkney; you will be based in the art studios. There is also access to a dedicated computer suite, workshops and the college library. There are also field trips to various locations around Orkney, including art gallery and museum visits.

Full Time - 1 year. Face to face studio teaching 3 days/week, with 2 days self directed home study

Full time
If you are studying a full time Further Education course (NCs, NQs etc.) the College claims your fees from the Scottish Funding Council for students who are under 18 on the first day of the course. Students over the age of 18 on the first day of the course have to apply to Orkney Islands Council (OIC) for a tuition fees bursary.

Part time
Normally you are responsible for your course fees but if you are in receipt of certain benefits you may be eligible for a Part Time Course Fee Waiver. Not all part-time courses at Orkney College UHI are covered by the Fee Waiver Scheme and only certain benefits are acceptable as a basis for a Fee Waiver. Please contact the college to enquire.
If you are eligible, you may be entitled to an ILA of up to £200 a year towards a course.

Progression
BA (Hons) Fine Art or BA (Hons) Fine Art Textiles at UHI Orkney. Application to Art Schools and Colleges.
Career Opportunities
Students may pursue a career in the area of art and design and with their portfolio of artwork, may gain places on Higher Education courses.
Achieving an NC qualification may lead to jobs or apprenticeships in for example, jewellery, digital media, graphic design or textiles.
Former students have progressed to degree level and on graduation have entered a range of professions, including free lance artists and designers, working in galleries and museums, teaching and education.
