NC Agriculture SCQF Level 6

What is special about this course?

The course is aimed at people who are moving towards a job on a farm for the first time; are wanting to learn about farming whilst coming from a farming background; want to improve their career prospects for people working in farming with no formal qualification; are looking to try something new and get ideas for a career path leading to higher national qualifications.

Entry requirements

4 x National 4's or 4 x Standard Grades (general level or equivalent)

There are 12 modules required for this award. A selection of some of the modules for NC: Livestock husbandry Combinable Crop Production Tractor Operations with Attachments Farm Maintenance Skills Soils and Fertility Grassland Production Beef Production Sheep Production

How will I study my course?

  • Full Time

A variety of learning approaches may be used during the delivery of the NC, for example, lectures, group and project work, farm visits and practical activities with farm livestock, equipment both in the field and workshop.

How long will my course last?

1 Year

The NC in Agriculture SCQF 6 provides a progression route to gain a higher-level qualification in agriculture.

Fees

Full time

If you are studying a full time Further Education course (NCs, NQs etc.) the College claims your fees from the Scottish Funding Council for students who are under 18 on the first day of the course. Students over the age of 18 on the first day of the course have to apply to Orkney Islands Council (OIC) for a tuition fees bursary.

Part time

Normally you are responsible for your course fees but if you are in receipt of certain benefits you may be eligible for a Part Time Course Fee Waiver. Not all part-time courses at Orkney College UHI are covered by the Fee Waiver Scheme and only certain benefits are acceptable as a basis for a Fee Waiver. Please contact the college to enquire.

If you are eligible, you may be entitled to an ILA of up to £200 a year towards a course.

Additional costs

PPE for outside activities will be provided at a cost.

What can I do on completion of my course?

This qualification is aimed at meeting the needs of two distinct potential groups of applicants. This qualification will cater for school leavers who have a strong and genuine interest in agriculture; and it is anticipated that such candidates will have achieved formal school qualifications and consider further education as a route toward full time employment, or progression to higher level or work based qualifications in agriculture. The qualification will also cater for those who are in employment who wish to develop a broader range of agricultural skills for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
