Free breakfast is on the table for students

Hallowe’en is here, but at Orkney College UHI there are no tricks - only treats - and we have something spooktacular to offer our students...

We all know a healthy and filling breakfast can set you up for the day, so Orkney College UHI is now offering all its students the opportunity to boost their brainpower by starting the day with a free breakfast in the college canteen.

All OC students will have a choice of either:

  • Toast and a choice of spreads;
  • Porridge and honey to drizzle if you like it sweet;
  • Milk and water to drink.

The complimentary breakfast service starts today, Monday 31 October and is available Monday – Thursday between 8am-9.30am.

A spokesperson from the College said: “The initiative was launched in response to the cost-of-living crisis faced by students. We understand many of our students face significant challenges to maintain and complete their education, so it’s crucial we support and help them to reach their full potential.

“Research shows that a nutritious breakfast provides the fuel to support learning, as well as improving mental and physical health. We are committed to the wellbeing of our students and hope this gesture will have a positive effect on our student’s academic success and overall health.”

Chair of the Council’s Education, Leisure and Housing Committee, Councillor Gwenda Shearer added: “A hearty, nutritious and balanced breakfast is proven to set you up for the day and there’s strong links to improved academic performance and in these ever-challenging times, it may just be that peedie helping hand that some need.

“Well done to Orkney College on the scheme which is sure to go down the hatch well with students!”
