Whether you’re looking to begin a career in childcare or progress into teaching, our courses support you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to work with children and young people.
With pathways from entry level through to postgraduate study, you can study locally in Orkney while preparing for roles across childcare settings or training to become a primary or secondary teacher without leaving the islands.
Support learning. Shape futures. Make a difference.

Childcare
Our childcare courses provide a strong foundation for those looking to begin or develop a career in early learning and childcare.
You’ll develop skills in areas such as child development, communication, safeguarding and supporting learning through play, alongside gaining an understanding of professional practice within childcare settings.
Courses are available at a range of levels, from introductory study through to more advanced qualifications, supporting progression within the sector.
This pathway can lead to careers such as early years practitioner, nursery worker, childcare practitioner or support roles within schools and community settings. With further study, there are opportunities to progress into management or specialist roles, or continue on to areas such as teaching.
Education (Teaching Pathways)
For those looking to progress into teaching, UHI Orkney offers pathways into both Primary and Secondary education through postgraduate study.
The PGDE (Professional Graduate Diploma in Education) combines academic study with professional learning, helping you develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to teach and support learners effectively.
Primary teaching focuses on supporting learning across the curriculum, helping children develop key skills in literacy, numeracy and wellbeing.
Secondary teaching allows you to specialise in a subject area, building your expertise while learning how to engage and support young people in your chosen discipline.
With local delivery and strong links to schools, you can train to become a teacher without leaving Orkney while studying for a nationally recognised teaching qualification.

Placements & Real Experience
Learn in real settings with real learners.
Many of our courses include practical placement opportunities within local schools and childcare settings, giving you valuable hands-on experience in real working environments.
These placements allow you to apply your learning, build confidence and develop the professional skills needed to work effectively with children and young people.
